Ghia front flare, about 1-1/2" wider than stock. A Ghia front flare looks good with a reverse shape blending into the fender. It is easy to overdo reverses, and end up with a poor design. Better to be conservative.

Wheel opening formed from 3/8" square stock. True three dimensional shape can be put in these panels before or after welding using more traditional metalshaping techniques. Both methods are shown.

0-1-9 Magnetic flow strip used to check for high and low spots during shaping, as well as the overall shape. This flare has a gentle bulge flowing into a very slight reverse towards the front. No reverse at the rear.
(46.05 KB)

You can get these magnetic strips from www.magnetite.com 1-800-624-8483 You must order a set of 4. They are for windows so get a set for a 3'x4' window. They answer the phone better than email.

0-1-5 My favorite hammer..the 1-5/8" large end has a nice shallow crown for general smoothing, the 1-1/4" smaller head has a slightly higher crown for stretching or smoothing where the larger head would not fit well.
(44.58 KB)

The hammer and dollies are used to smooth the lumps made by stretching with the ballpeen or palm nailer. You will be hitting the metal thousands of times so get good tools!
9960145833493.jpg
0-1-4 My three most used dollies...these are all flat side to side, and have different curves up and down. Buy high quality dollies. You won't regret it.
(48.33 KB)

The one in the middle is the one I used the most on all these fenders. The one on the left was used where slightly more curve was needed up and down on the flares. The one on the right was used on parts of the fender with less up and down curve.
9980145833493.jpg
0-1-3 For faster stretching, use a palm nailer with a stainless carriage bolt instead of the ballpeen hammer...available at Home Depot for about $100 Air compressor required. Although optional, this tool is a great investment which will save your arms.

0-1-2 leather purse from thrift store filled with sand. This is hung off the side of the car and pounded into with the ballpeen to absorb the stretch, just like the shot dolly. The difference is the shot dolly is hand held.

0-1 24oz. ballpeen hammer, and shot dolly. You could do a very nice job flaring a car with just the shot dolly, ballpeen, and a hammer and dolly.
(43.03 KB)

Basic tools for creating shape by stretching. The ballpeen is available at Home Depot for about $15. The shot dolly is available from: www.metalcrafttools.com...also about $15...you must supply sand...pack it full and wire it shut.

0-0Although this Ghia was done using my no longer available weld on flares, the do-it-yourself technique would work well for this. The fronts would be stretched and the rears would be roll formed and stretched as seen below.

0-00 cmb22 Felix Pabros' "Neo 914-6" has stretched front fenders by Mark DeBernardi (www.paintandmetal.com), and roll formed and shaped rear flares. Both methods are shown in this video.
(151.78 KB)

This DVD covers stretching, shrinking, smoothing, and controlling the contours of your work using multiple methods, with inexpensive and/or hand made tools. Simple-to-learn high quality dent-repair is covered.
