...cutting out part of the flange so that you are shrinking a smaller leg, then weld in metal after your corner is formed. Some cracks formed on this test piece and were welded up.

This sample piece shows that it is sometimes advantageous to trap more apparent shape than you need and let it escape a little as you hammer.
